The latest release from the Sukajan (souvenir jacket) collection by Y’s and Tailor Toyo launches on Friday, October 17.
This new collaboration piece is worn by Chanmina.
The Sukajan collection by Y’s and Tailor Toyo is devoted to the craftsmanship of Made in Japan, meticulously recreating every detail of vintage souvenir jackets from a time when such attention to quality was the norm—even as modern versions are now often made overseas. This commitment extends not only to authenticity but also to achieving refined, high-quality silhouettes. One of the distinctive features of a “Y’s SUKAJAN” is the incorporation of design elements true to vintage specifications, which are often more delicate than contemporary garments.
One such innovation is the daring embroidery placed on the sleeves—something rarely seen on satin fabric due to the technical challenges it presents. This was made possible through highly specialized techniques and original embroidery methods, allowing the piece to maintain the satin’s signature lightness while achieving a clean yet sophisticated edge.
This collaboration piece is crafted as a special edition under the prestigious “Kosho Label,” a line within Tailor Toyo that focuses on carefully selected designs reconstructed with uncompromising attention to detail. The label proudly features the name of Tailor Toyo’s predecessor, “KOSHO & CO.”
Intricate designs are rendered using traditional horizontal embroidery. The acetate fabric is woven to closely match the look and feel of vintage garments, while the wool ribbing is knitted individually on old-fashioned circular knitting machines.
The zipper is faithfully reproduced using hand-bending techniques on fastening machines that were reactivated after more than 50 years. Each component revives the delicate yet authentic specifications of the era, reproduced with unwavering dedication.

TAILOR TOYO
“Tailor Toyo” is the Sukajan-focused brand of Toyo Enterprise.
Its predecessor, “KOSHO & CO. (Kosho Shokai),” was established in the postwar 1940s, engaging in the import and export of textiles and other materials. Witnessing the interest of American soldiers in traditional Japanese garments such as kimonos and obi at black markets in Ginza, employees at Kosho conceived a souvenir item—jackets embroidered with oriental designs. This marked the birth of what is now known as the Sukajan, a style of clothing that originated in Japan.
Modeled after the American baseball jacket for familiarity, the embroidery was entrusted to artisans from Kiryu and Ashikaga. Due to postwar material shortages, silk was difficult to obtain, so acetate—a silk-like fabric—was used. The jackets quickly gained popularity when sold in street stalls and later caught the attention of PX (Post Exchange) buyers from US military bases, leading to widespread distribution across Japan and even internationally.
Old delivery slips from that era list them under the product name “SOUVENIR JACKET.”
Tailor Toyo, which began with Kosho, has been producing souvenir jackets for over half a century—carrying on the legacy as both the originator and cultural custodian of the Sukajan.
