On Friday, July 18, Y’s will release the “Y’s ALOHASHIRT” — a collaboration with SUN SURF, the Aloha shirt brand by Toyo Enterprise — as part of its 2025-26 Autumn/Winter collection.
The shirt features a dynamic design of a dragon swimming through thunderclouds with Mount Fuji in the background. The texture is simple yet rich in depth; classic, yet modern. This is a one-of-a-kind piece that fuses the traditional beauty of Japan with the vibrant culture of Hawaii.
Actor Sho Kasamatsu models the latest item in Y’s ongoing collaboration with Toyo Enterprise, following the sukajan (souvenir jackets) and ska-shirts.
The fabric used is rayon hechirimen, a crepe material originally developed for traditional Japanese garments. Its natural texture creates a three-dimensional appearance, with a surface that changes expression depending on the viewing angle. It offers a light, cool touch — perfect for summer wear.
The shirt uses an "overprint" technique, layering deep colors onto a pale base to produce beautiful gradients and shadows. This method vividly and delicately expresses the dragon and Mount Fuji as if painted. The rich layering of numerous colors adds depth and gives the piece an artistic finish.
The design incorporates traditional Japanese motifs and so-called “oriental” patterns. These elements symbolize the deep historical connection between Japan and Hawaii, rooted in the influence of Japanese immigrant culture. By blending Japanese aesthetics with a tropical garment like the Aloha shirt, the design harmonizes East and West, tradition and modernity, creating an unmatched visual presence.
This Aloha shirt encapsulates traditional craftsmanship, the beauty of premium materials, and cultural narrative — a piece of “wearable art” that enhances the individuality and sensibility of the wearer.
The “Y’s ALOHASHIRT” will be available starting Friday, July 18, at all Y’s stores in Japan and through the official online boutique.
About SUN SURF
SUN SURF is an Aloha shirt brand by Toyo Enterprise, specializing in vintage-style rayon shirts. Founded in the 1970s, the brand has amassed and studied thousands of vintage Aloha shirts as reference materials. Using detailed research, they meticulously recreate designs, colors, and materials from shirts originally made in Hawaii during the 1930s–50s. This is achieved through the precise and skillful craftsmanship that is characteristic of Japanese artisans.
A defining feature of SUN SURF shirts is the vibrant coloration and rich tones of their prints. These are brought to life through labor-intensive hand-printing techniques, faithfully reproducing even the most delicate details. Each shirt is a deeply expressive piece — a work of art that carries history and culture.
