Ground Y, the brand that explores new possibilities in fashion through genderless and ageless styles, reinterpreting diverse influences through the lens of Yohji Yamamoto, presents a special collaboration collection inspired by the world of Taro Okamoto, one of Japan's leading avant-garde artists of the 20th century.

The collection will be available from Friday, July 31, 2026.

After travelling to France in the 1930s, Taro Okamoto immersed himself in the international art scene of Paris, engaging with abstract art and the Surrealist movement. Upon returning to Japan, he continued to expand his creative practice across painting, monumental sculpture, public art, cultural criticism, and ethnology—crossing boundaries between disciplines and, quite literally, allowing genres to “explode.”

This collaboration brings together the energy and primal force of Okamoto's colors and forms with Ground Y's distinctive creative language.

The collaboration explores the theme of Layering, transforming Okamoto's artistic vision into wearable art.

His nuanced use of color is reinterpreted through advanced printing techniques and the layering of diverse fabrics. Contrasting materials and zipper details further emphasize the depth and dimensionality of the original artworks.

The Collage series reconstructs and combines multiple works through inkjet printing, creating new compositions from Okamoto's visual language. Fabric paneling, interchangeable collars, and other distinctive details reveal the creative dialogue between Taro Okamoto's art and Ground Y's design approach.

Two shirts, created using advanced cutwork techniques, structurally reinterpret Tower of the Sun and Adressant. Through precisely cut openings, layered fabrics and contrasting colors emerge to create multidimensional expressions.

The Graphic T-shirt series features eight designs, each reinterpreting paintings, monuments, and other works by Taro Okamoto as graphic compositions. Each design reflects a connection to the regions where Ground Y's flagship stores are located.

▼Taro Okamoto (1911–1996)

A leading Japanese avant-garde artist. In 1930s Paris, he encountered cutting-edge ideas and art, including abstract art, Surrealism, and ethnology, and developed his own unique aesthetic. After World War II, he pioneered innovative forms of expression across a wide range of fields, including painting, sculpture, design, and criticism, introducing new values to the Japanese art world. In 1970, he created the Tower of the Sun for the Osaka Expo, producing one of Japan’s most iconic works of art. His creativity and pioneering spirit continue to influence many people even after his death.
