Ground Y × Taro Okamoto Collaboration Collection

Ground Y, a brand that reimagines fashion through the lens of Yohji Yamamoto Inc., incorporating diverse elements that resonate with its concept while proposing new possibilities in fashion through genderless and ageless style, will release a special collaboration collection inspired by the world of Taro Okamoto, one of Japan’s most iconic avant-garde artists of the 20th century, on Friday, July 31.

After moving to France in the 1930s, Okamoto became deeply involved in Paris’s international art scene, participating in movements surrounding abstract art and Surrealism. Upon returning to Japan, he continued an expansive creative practice that quite literally “exploded” across disciplines — spanning painting, monumental sculpture, public art, cultural criticism, and anthropological exploration.

This collaboration brings together Okamoto’s energetic, primal use of color and form with Ground Y’s distinctive creative perspective, resulting in a collection that merges artistic intensity with contemporary fashion expression.

Further details will be announced through official media channels on Friday, July 24.

About Taro Okamoto (1911–1996)
Taro Okamoto was one of Japan’s most influential avant-garde artists. During his time in Paris in the 1930s, he encountered the forefront of modern thought and artistic movements, including abstract art, Surrealism, and ethnology, experiences that shaped his singular artistic philosophy. Following World War II, he developed groundbreaking work across painting, sculpture, design, and cultural criticism, continually redefining the boundaries of artistic expression in Japan. In 1970, he created Tower of the Sun for the Osaka Expo, producing one of Japan’s most iconic modern artworks. His fearless creativity and uncompromising spirit continue to inspire generations long after his passing.
