NEW Collabration with “Demon of Painting” Kyosai KAWANABE

The Kyosai Kawanabe 2020 Spring Collection—a collaboration between Ground Y and Kyosai Kawanabe, a ukiyo-e artist known as the “Demon of Painting” who was active in the mid-to-late 1800s—will be launched on Friday, January 17, 2020.

Through the filter of Yohji Yamamoto Inc., a collaboration is being launched between Ground Y—a brand that presents new fashion potential in a genderless, ageless style, while incorporating the versatile elements that synchronize with the brand concept—and Kyosai Kawanabe, a ukiyo-e artist known for the broad scope of his artwork and who was active in the mid-to-late 1800s.

This collection transcends the ages by fusing thinking of the genius known as the Demon of Painting and the spirit of Ground Y, which carries on the manufacturing DNA of Yohji Yamamoto who advocates the antithesis of the mode of expression that tackled the black taboo head-on on the frontlines of the Paris Collection since 1981 based on the keyword “rebellious.” In addition to 13 of Kyosai Kawanabe’s representative works, one work is also included by his daughter Kyosui Kawanabe.

The selections for this collection have been calculated so that the wearer is clad in patterns that create a mood that maximally express Yohji Yamamoto’s creative DNA, in addition to reversible specification gimmicks. Moreover, the use of vintage crepe de Chine fabrics , inspired by the aesthetic of traditional Japanese kimono and clothing that conceals the body, give the pants, woven items, and cloaks the heightened duplicability of precious works by Kyosai and Kyosui Kawanabe.

Appearing at the launch as key visual models will be Non, who is an actress as well as an artist active in a variety of fields, and Mario Kuroba, who acts in movies, TV, and the theater.

Beginning on Friday, January 17, 2020, items in the collection will go on sale at Ground Y’s directly operated stores (Ginza Six/Laforet Harajuku/Shibuya Parco) with sales expanding to official dealers and Yohji Yamamoto’s official online The Shop Yohji Yamamoto on Friday, January 24, 2020.
